To me, Jhapa, Nepal has always been like an old friend, or rather an embrace. As a child, I used to spend the majority of my days off from the school in the lush embrace of its seemingly endless landscapes, convinced that I have roamed its every hidden path and uncovered all its secrets. And then, during my second year of college, I distinctly heard a whisper of a tale of a hidden wonder – Kechana, known as the lowest point in Nepal, embedded in the southeastern corner of the district. A young girl who just turned 11 had her very first period. It was another chilly winter day, one that was followed by days and days without the sight of the sun as is typical for the lowlands of Nepal. Often this exact sentence “Don’t react to such small things” has been said to me and many of my friends, when we try to speak up for the discrimination faced by women accumulated for years in a patriarchal society. It makes us question if bearing mean words like “Oh! Being a girl you have to learn to do the dishes” is easier than replying with a constructive argument like “All people in general should know how to do basic chores” as it brings about heated debates on the conventional gender roles present in the society.
