The pursuit of gender equality has been an ongoing global endeavor, aiming to ensure equal rights, opportunities, and representation for all genders. While significant progress has been made worldwide, many argue that the battle for gender equality is far from over.

In today’s scenario, despite the remarkable strides that have been made towards gender equality, some mistakenly believe that the goal has already been attained. This perception often stems from the notion that women now have access to education, employment, and decision-making roles. While these advancements are commendable, it is important to recognize that true gender equality encompasses various aspects, including social attitudes, cultural norms, and systemic biases that continue to persist.

SHH!! Why are laughing so loudly? Don’t speak when men are speaking. Walk properly! Smile properly! Dress properly!  Eat properly! Talk properly! Do not let the men do the household chores. You should take good care of the family. Do not go stay outside too late. There are phrases that are still used for girls or women. Even though women have a job, she is compelled to fulfil her household responsibility as well which does not apply to a man with a job. She is still not allowed to act according to her will.

Many men, in their daily lives, may genuinely believe that they are not leaving women behind. However, subtle gender biases and ingrained stereotypes can often go unnoticed. For instance, men might believe they are treating women equally because they believe in providing for their families financially. However, this viewpoint tends to overlook the importance of shared responsibilities and equal participation in household chores and child-rearing, which are vital components of achieving true gender equality.

One area where the disparities in perception become apparent is in the division of household chores. Despite women's increasing participation in the workforce, the burden of domestic responsibilities still disproportionately falls on their shoulders. Men, although they may contribute sporadically, often do not view household chores as their primary responsibility. This disparity perpetuates gender stereotypes and reinforces the idea that women are solely responsible for maintaining the household, further hindering progress toward true equality.

In Nepalese society, even among the educated, discrimination against women persists in various forms. Although education plays a significant role in challenging traditional gender roles and breaking barriers, it does not guarantee a complete eradication of discrimination. Deep-rooted cultural beliefs, expectations, and societal norms often continue to shape attitudes and behaviors, leading to gender disparities in areas such as employment, leadership positions, and access to resources. Women still face unequal treatment, limited opportunities for growth, and pervasive gender-based violence.

Recognizing the existing disparities and working towards a more inclusive society is crucial to achieving true gender equality. Education and awareness campaigns play a vital role in challenging the deeply ingrained biases and stereotypes that perpetuate discrimination. Engaging men as allies in the fight for gender equality is equally important. By promoting shared responsibilities, breaking gender norms, and fostering respectful relationships, we can build a more equitable society that benefits everyone.

It is essential to dispel the illusion of achievement and acknowledge the existing challenges that hinder the progress towards true gender equality. By fostering a collective effort to challenge stereotypes, address systemic biases, and promote equal opportunities, we can work towards building a society in Nepal where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to the nation's growth.
