" Eve teasing "
In our life , at some point or other, we have faced some kinds of harassment – particularly sexual harassment. Being a girl myself , I can’t remember how many times I’ve been eve teased .Eve teasing is a form of sexual harassment . It is the manifestation of sexual provocation of a person. It includes name calling , whisteling , winking eyes, humming the tunes of song when a girl or boy passes by ,catching hands ,touching inappropriately ,following ,passing obscene remarks ,etc. In our country most of the instances of eve teasing are related to women . Although men are likely to be eve teased but the proportion of men victims are relatively small. Eve teasing is a form of social dominance. In earlier societies , it was unusual for girls and boys to mix up. This suppressed their sexual desires . Even today the friendship of girls and boys are always questioned. This suppressed feeling is expressed through eve teasing. Another major factor that influences eve teasing could be the adaption of western culture and the influence of movies . Some movies portray eve teasing as normal and as a way of impressing girls . This has made a negative impact on the youths. Eve teasing makes the everyday lives of many girls difficult. It creates a sense of fear, insecurity and embarrassment to them . It places restrictions in their daily mobility while going to schools, colleges or even to works. They become more conscious about their security because eve teasing is one of the major precursors of physical assault and rape. I recall an incident of one of my friends . One day while she was on her way to the college a group of boys followed and teased her. She was terrified by this incident. From that day, she started going to college with her father as the incident instilled a sense of fear in her mind. I remember a time when I was too small to differentiate the good from the bad; when an elderly man winked at me on my way to school in a public vehicle. I knew I didn’t like it so I just decided to stomp on his feet. These are just a few instances that I have heard and faced myself .There are plenty of such instances which are happening in our society and country on a daily basis. Eve teasing is one form of crime . It is a sad fact that it is not taken seriously in our society .It is a moral crime which depicts the degenerative nature of a society. To control this social problem , conscious raising is needed . Strict rules and regulations should be implemented . Severe punishments should be given to the culprits . Moral education plays an important role in shaping a society. Girls should be encouraged to defend themselves. Society can only reform positively if their inner conscience are aroused. Respecting all genders equally is important for this .
