Depression is the state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s behaviour, feelings and sense of well being. It is the condition of mental disturbance. Depression is an abnormal emotion which affects our way of thinking and behaviour. Depression and sadness are two different things. Sadness is feeling of sorrow or unhappiness whereas depression is a state of mind producing serious or inability to visualize a happy future. Depressed people do not show interest in most of the activities including ones which used to be interesting or pleasurable previously. Some of its symptoms includes irritable mood, disturbance in falling asleep or sleeping too much, and feeling of worthless or excessive guilt most days. And most dangerous of all is thought of dying or suicide and harming themselves. Depression is emerging as an epidemic in present scenario. Depression is not limited to certain age groups. It is seen in developed, developing and underdeveloped countries around the world. The main cause is inability to handle stress and low self esteem. Globally more than 300 million people of all age group suffer from depression. Out of these 10% get medical treatment. Depression is the major contributor to global burden of disability Women are more vulnerable to depression than men. Chronic depression leads to suicide and it is the second leading cause of death among age group 15-29. Depression is a global challenge and threats to all of us. Depression being an emerging issue, we need to make ourselves aware of this. Depression should be minimized and for that it’s causes it to be identified. One important cause is victim of social narrative. We being social being try to be good in the eyes of others. We try hard to be smart infront of others and gradually we lose ourselves. And this loss leads to conflict of interest, loneliness and leads towards depression. Secondly, our expectations lead to dissatisfaction and that can cause depression. Why? Because when we can’t meet our own expectations we form inferiority complex and slowly we lack self-esteem. We underestimate ourselves and then gradually separate oneself. Other causes might be no social networking, family pressure, heartbreaks, etc. Whatever may be the cause we should always opt for the solution. And in order to control depression we need to look beyond self help it may be from family, friends or else. We can develop support system who can suggest and support us in difficult situation. Depression can be minimized when we are aware of it. Our kind words can help others to overcome depression. So, let’s try to develop the habit of empathy from now onwards.
