To me, Jhapa, Nepal has always been like an old friend, or rather an embrace. As a child, I used to spend the majority of my days off from the school in the lush embrace of its seemingly endless landscapes, convinced that I have roamed its every hidden path and uncovered all its secrets. And then, during my second year of college, I distinctly heard a whisper of a tale of a hidden wonder – Kechana, known as the lowest point in Nepal, embedded in the southeastern corner of the district. For some unexplainable reason, just the knowledge of the element’s existence lit a fire in me, triggering a burning desire to uncover its secrets.

The thrill resonated in me as I walked, blending into Jhapa’s lush vision. Every twist, turn, and green field worked its magic, painting Kechana. The place lay only in murmurs and tales in the wind, a legend I was investigating. The trip was an experience of its own; the rough passages, hills, and forests covered in sunshine touched by smiling houses. Every step was a story cover unveiling. Finally, I reached the gates of Kechana after hours of exploration.

Crossing over into Kechana was like stumbling upon a portal to a world that could have been as far as the day was from night. Rolling hills painted in the hues of verdant greens stretched out before me, receding into the very horizon, while the air itself was resonant with a vibration of peace that all but erased the stresses from my daily life. Nevertheless, the true life of Kechana lay in its people: though they were all strangers, they welcomed me with a sense of belonging and smiles that reached their eyes.

We exchanged stories over steaming cups of chai, a bridge across cultures and backgrounds. As we actively took part in the local festivities, I felt a sense of home like never before. Kechana’s riche tapestry of vibrancy – festivals that were a riot of color and life, and rituals older than time practiced with utmost respect – was all I saw. To me, everything was a testimony to the indomitable spirit and sheer grit that defined Kechana.

However, one of the most striking discoveries was the two historical ponds, which were supposed to be built even by King Birtat in the era of Mahabharata. I remember standing there, in front of this antique monument with a feeling of warm connection to the distant period. In such moments, the heaviness of history looms in the air, perfectly reflecting the combined integrity of Kechana and its people.

As my time in Kechana came to a close, I felt a sense of bittersweetness in me. This hidden gem had gifted me with treasures far more valuable than any other gifts and presents. It had opened up my paths to the beauty of unexpected places, the warmth of genuine human connection, as well as the profound respect for tradition that thrives in Nepal's heartland.

The return to Jhapa was a renewed one, my entire image of Nepal changing to account for the unknown sublimities scattered across the land. What was once only a rumor had become a statement familiar and important to me. As the people just heard the name, it is proof that, upon removing the well-known facade, a fantastic domain springs, waiting for the courageous to delve into its hidden mysteries.

However, the story of Kechana is not only about its beautiful scenery and its rich cultural legacy. Above all, it is a story of people who show extraordinary resilience. Situated in the lowlands, the village struggles with flooding, including climate change effects. Still, the people maintain full spirit. They find ways to adjust, develop, and live according to the considerations of their special homeland.

I can see this resilience in the sustainable farming that my hosts engage in. There are several families who grow organic rice on small paddies – proof of their reverence for the land and the desire for a vigorous future. The local craftsmanship also seems to have been handed down from generation to generation and continued to thrive, which adds to the colorful character of the village.

Finally, Kechana’s tale demonstrates the utmost relevance of responsible tourism. With an increasing number of travelers learning about this hidden jewel, it is critical that the development of that tourism creates opportunities for the residents. Embracing locally-owned homestays, engaging only in mindful travel adventures, and taking every step to ensure the local cultural richness stays undimmed – this is how travelers can guarantee the magic of Kechana remains untouched.
