Two friends, Aarav, and Pranav were chatting over a cup of tea after college as Aarav waited for his sister to pick him up. In a meanwhile, Aarav’s sister called him and asked him to stay standby as she left her office and is on her way to pick him up. Pranav always had this thought on how responsible Aarav’s sister is and how gracefully she has been taking up all the family responsibilities after their father passed away few years ago. After a little pause in their talk, Pranav again started the conversation….

Pranav: Hey Aarav, you are very lucky to have a sister like her who has been looking up to you and taking up all the responsibilities after your father and also takes care of you like a parent.

Aarav: Absolutely! I am. You know after my father left us, we never could imagine how our lives would turn, but Barsha never let me and mom down. She works very hard each day to provide us with everything we ever need.

Pranav: Yeah, and nowadays, every daughter, every sister, every wife, and every woman have started working for themselves and for their families, which has changed the dynamics of the many lives and of the entire community as well. Have you ever noticed the changing dynamics of gender roles in our communities lately?

Aarav: Yeah, absolutely! It's been quite interesting to see the shift in traditional gender norms. Women and girls seem to be breaking barriers and taking on roles that were once considered exclusive to men.

Pranav: And I am also hearing a lot about more women entering the workforce and pursuing careers outside of the stereotypical roles. Don’t you think it's a positive step towards gender equality as well and above all women being in different roles as expected for a man is a normal thing.

Aarav: Definitely. I think increased awareness and education play a significant role in challenging those traditional norms. The younger generation seems more open-minded and supportive of breaking free from gender stereotypes, after all, one’s mindset makes a huge difference.

Pranav: True, I agree. Education is key. But I also believe in how people perceive the things around them. If someone is just arrogant and sticks by what they have been growing up through and cannot make themselves flexible enough to unlearn and learn new ideas and possibilities, then I think, things will not switch to derive the change we would love to witness. Anyway, I've also noticed the importance of dialogue and discussions around gender equality. It's encouraging to see more people engaging in conversations about dismantling gender norms and fostering inclusivity these days.

Aarav: I agree. Creating awareness is crucial. And yes Pranav, sometimes we cannot change all at once and changing somebody’s belief is quite impossible but the least we can do at our level is not support such stereotypes. It's not just about empowering women; it's also about challenging harmful stereotypes that restrict men from expressing their emotions or pursuing non-traditional roles.

Pranav: That's a great point and I also agree on how gender roles affect everyone. Breaking free from these stereotypes benefits society as a whole. Have you seen any specific initiatives or movements in our communities or even at the national level that address these issues?

Aarav: Yes, there are various organizations and campaigns working towards gender equality. They focus on education, empowerment, and changing societal attitudes. It's heartening to see the positive impact they're making across many places and touching many lives.

Pranav: It's good to know that there's progress and people are mindful about taking initiatives regarding these issues. Still, there must be challenges along the way. How do you think the cultural and traditional values that exist in our communities impact the pace of change?

Aarav: Oh! That’s a must to consider point, but cultural values can be both a support and a hindrance. On one hand, they provide a sense of identity, but on the other, they can foster the continuation in belief on outdated norms. I think the key must be something like finding a balance between respecting cultural values and adapting to a more inclusive and equal society.

Aarav: Absolutely! The more we talk about it and actively work towards change, the closer we get to a society where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive without being confined by outdated norms.

Aarav: Hey Pranav! You started a conversation that turned out really meaningful and enriching. My sister is already here. Let’s leave for home and yeah, see you tomorrow and don’t forget to complete the science notes.
