Year: 2016 - ongoing
Supported by: Nike Foundation through Charity Aid Foundation America
Major component: menstrual health management awareness, menstrual health friendly schools, volunteerism, capacity development

Introduction

Since the launch of No Shame to bleed project in 2016, Visible Impact has been advocating for safer and healthier menstruation by enhancing knowledge, skills and participation for both boys and girls. It also aims to advocate with the government for formulating and implementing policies to eliminate all forms of discrimination that occurs with girls and women during menstruation.

Activities conducted under the project

School based workshops on MHM

Visible Impact is conducting school based workshop on Menstrual Health Management through its Sarathi program. “Sarathi” is a group of young people who are trained to deliver workshops on Menstrual Health Management. Sarathis conduct a one day Menstrual Health management workshop in different schools to promote school based advocacy by enhancing awareness on menstrual health and hygiene. Primarily targeting students of classes 8,9 and 10 an interactive co-ed based workshop is implemented to provide information on the anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs, myths vs facts, maintenance of health and hygiene during menstruation including the roles of gatekeepers-men and school authorities. These workshops have been conducted in various districts across Nepal in partnership with other organizations as well (eg: Karuna Foundation, Helping Hands Kharanitar, etc.)

Youth activism

Sarathis have been writing and sharing their stories about concurrent issues to their first menstruation experience. These are published as blogs in the organizations website and shared in our social media accounts. Also, Visible Impact has established the system of learning through sharing within the organization. As part of the experience of Sarathi they are provided the opportunities to participate in learning circles. The learning circles are provided in different areas to develop their technical skills and also for their own personal development.

Similarly, Visible Impact marks International Menstrual Hygiene through organizing various competitions and sharing relevant contents through social media pages. Visim has organized inter-school speech competition, TikTok challenge, photo and caption writing competition.

Research on Menstrual Health Friendliness of Schools

Visible Impact is currently conducting a research entitled “A Study to assess the Menstrual Health Friendliness of Schools in Kathmandu Valley” realizing that there is a need for comprehensive study on menstrual health friendliness of the schools examining the infrastructural challenges as well as the school environment as a whole. The specific objectives are to assess the status of infrastructures and perception of the school authorities and students to determine the menstrual health friendliness of schools; and to assess the association between socio cultural factors and menstrual health friendliness score of the school. This analytical cross-sectional study collects both qualitative and quantitative data from 14 public and private school of Kathmandu valley.

Our Impact

Through No Shame to Bleed project, Visim has successfully recruited and trained 40 volunteers since 2016. Sarathis have been provided with opportunities to develop both their personal and profession skills through engagement in consultations, learning circles and opportunities to attend learning programs organized by different institutions as well. A total of 66 menstrual health workshops have been conducted in 66 schools in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Tanahun, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk and Solukumbu districts reaching out to more than 2000 students.
