Beyond the Mirror: Seeing the Soul, Not the Gender

BY JASNA MAHARJAN

When we look into a mirror, we usually notice our face, hair, clothes — the outside. But how often do we pause to look beyond that reflection? Behind every face is a soul – full of dreams, emotions, struggles, and strength. And that soul has no gender.

In today’s world, most things are categorized into male & female – from school records to restrooms, from dress codes to personality in society.  But there are people who don’t fit into these two boxes. They identify as the third gender, and they are just as real, valid, and human as anyone else.

Unfortunately, many third gender individuals face discrimination, exclusion, and judgment. Often, society sees only their appearance, not their heart. But when we stop labeling and start listening, we begin to understand that their experiences, hopes, and rights are no different from ours. We must learn to look beyond the mirror – beyond what someone looks like or how they are labeled  –  and see the person within. Gender is just one part of identity. It should never limit someone’s dignity, opportunity, or place in society.

Let’s ask ourselves:

  • Can we treat everyone with equal respect, regardless of gender identity?
  • Can we stop judging and start understanding?
  • Can we create a world where everyone feels seen and accepted?

The answer should be Yes — because kindness has no gender.

Final Thought:

In the end, we all are human. What truly matters is not the label society gives us, but the compassion – we show, the love we share, and the respect we give – to ourselves and to others.

Let’s see the soul, not just the gender.
Let’s go beyond the mirror
